Evaporation loss

This characteristic value can be used to draw conclusions about the evaporation characteristics of the oil - in a hot engine for example.

Thus, a low-viscosity SAE 10W oil, due to its smaller molecular size and therefore lower boiling temperature, has a significantly higher evaporation loss at high temperatures (e.g. 250°C) as compared to a SAE 50 oil with significantly bigger molecules and higher boiling temperature.

ACEA limits the evaporation loss between <= 13% and <= 15%.
